Sympathy Flowers; Funeral flowers; What is Casket Spray? Can I send casket to the Family?

A casket spray is a large floral arrangement that is placed directly on top of the casket during a funeral service. It is one of the most prominent and significant floral tributes, often designed with flowers that symbolize peace, love, and remembrance.

Types of Casket Sprays:

  1. Full Casket Spray: Designed to cover the entire casket. This type is typically used for closed-casket funerals.  A full casket spray is large enough to cover the entire length and width of a closed casket, offering a beautiful and elegant tribute to the deceased. These sprays are often made with traditional funeral flowers like lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, and orchids. White is the most common colour used, symbolizing peace, purity, and reverence, but other colours can be incorporated based on family preferences or the deceased’s favourite flowers. The arrangement can be simple or elaborate, with cascading flowers and greenery to create a lush, flowing appearance that complements the solemnity of the occasion. Families often personalize full casket sprays with specific flowers, colours, or even symbolic items that reflect the deceased's personality, interests, or life. Full casket sprays are typically used in funerals where the casket remains closed. The flowers cover the entire surface, creating a visually stunning centrepiece for the service. These arrangements are usually selected by the closest family members, such as a spouse, children, or parents, as a final tribute.
  2. Half Casket Spray: Covers only a portion of the casket, often the lower half. It is commonly used in open-casket funerals, leaving space to view the deceased. Used when the casket is open for viewing, this arrangement covers only part of the casket, usually the lower half. The spray is placed on the lower half of the casket, leaving the upper part open. This allows for the deceased’s body to be visible during the service while still providing a beautiful floral tribute. Half casket sprays are smaller than full casket sprays, but they are still a significant and elegant arrangement.

Similar to full casket sprays, half sprays often include traditional funeral flowers such as roses, lilies, carnations, and chrysanthemums. The colours and style can be customized to reflect the preferences of the family or the personality of the deceased. These arrangements are usually designed to cascade gracefully over the edge of the casket, adding a touch of elegance and serenity. The spray can be simple or elaborate, depending on family preferences.

Half casket sprays are the most appropriate choice for funerals where the casket is open for viewing. The arrangement decorates the lower half of the casket while leaving space for mourners to view the deceased.  Like full casket sprays, half sprays are typically chosen by immediate family members (spouses, children, parents) to honour the deceased.

Key Features:

  • Size and Prominence: Casket sprays are often the largest and most elaborate floral arrangements at the service.
  • Flowers and Design: Typically, they are designed with white lilies, roses, chrysanthemums, carnations, and other serene flowers, although they can be customized with flowers in the deceased’s favourite colours or styles.
  • Personalized Message: Casket sprays may include ribbons or cards with messages of condolence, often from immediate family members.

Can You Send a Casket Spray?

Typically, casket sprays are reserved for the closest family members of the deceased, such as spouses, children, or parents, as they are the primary tribute adorning the casket itself. If you are not an immediate family member, sending a casket spray may not be appropriate, as it could overlap with what the family has chosen.

What You Can Send Instead:

If you’re a friend, colleague, or extended family member, it is more common to send other types of floral tributes, such as:

  • Standing Sprays: Tall floral arrangements displayed on an easel, usually placed near the casket.
  • Funeral Wreaths: Circular arrangements that symbolize eternal life, placed near the casket or on display. Cross-shaped wreath is another floral arrangement designed in the shape of a Christian cross, symbolizing faith, eternal life, and hope in Christian funerals or memorial services. It is a traditional and deeply meaningful tribute, especially for those with strong religious beliefs.
  • Floral Bouquets: More modest arrangements that can be placed around the funeral service or taken home by the family.

While casket sprays are typically reserved for close family members, you can still send other beautiful and appropriate floral arrangements to honour the deceased and support the family during their loss.
